Is the work ethic of the United States and Canada at the level that it should be?
Is the workmanship at the standard it should or could be at?
I would have to say NO it’s not.
I will be taking a look into these two questions and diving deep into the meanings of why we should work hard, why we need to work well, and why we need to give it our best effort.
So lets start with the definition of work and ethic from Websters! Work ethic is defined as “a belief in work as a moral good”. So this means that working is good… simply put. Do you think your Job or work is a moral good? Do you think you are doing a good thing while your working? Your work is not simply your job that you go to daily but anything you do daily.
I work as a banquet server and I am in charge of setting up for events here at my University, but my work is also the homework I do and the devotions I do everyday. Work is the relationships I keep up on everyday. Work is the workout I do…. when I decide to actually commit to it… (that was a joke and you CAN laugh). But Work is whatever you do on a daily basis that takes time and commitment. That can be your job, your marriage or relationship, it can be a workout or a dissertation you are writing for your Ordination.
Workmanship is defined as “quality of the work that is done by someone”. The quality of the work or job that we do these days is not 100% anymore. I would say that the quality we put into the work we do is about 30-50% instead of 100%. We do what we need and not what we should.. When our Boss says that we need to give 100% we should give 130%! (These “Stats” are all created off my mind and what I believe they are not real or accurate at 100%)
So Why should we work hard/ why do we need to work hard? As Christians we should work hard because that is what is accepted as Christians! In Colossians 3:23 it says “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (ESV) and Proverbs 13:4 says “The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied” (ESV). It is clearly laid out in Scripture that we as Christians are called to work diligently and work hard.
In a secular point of view, i still think its good to work hard because you are giving to the community and to people you know. Your not just working hard for yourselves but you are working towards an ultimate goal that you can give to others. The gift of hard work and appreciation for strangers is amazing and people love it! Don’t we all love it when we are unified and can work well together as a Community? Working hard is a good thing even from a secular point of view
so Why do we need to give our work our best effort? This is because Christian or secular we were put here or created for a purpose. As Christians that purpose is to serve and worship our Lord and bring more to his kingdom and for a secular person you are always searching for that answer of why am I here? As Christians we are called to do our best in all we do… In Colossians 3:24 it says “Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (ESV). Which is why we need to do our best. We receive a gift and we are serving the most high Lord… That should mean something to you Christians out there!!! HELLO!!!! God is a good, marvelous, kind, gentle, and most high God. That should make you want to give your 200% and give it all to him who has created you… who has molded you… who is your Abba, your father!
In a secular point of view… you have nothing. i’m sorry to say it like that but its true. You have no greater calling or being who you serve… you don’t even serve yourself usually.. your kind and caring and nice and gentle but yet you will not see the all knowing and all powerful creator who is all these things that most people are in today’s world. The human race is all about changing the world for the better, all rights, all equals, and all together as one… is that not what God wants? Does God not want everyone to have equal rights under his law that he created for that reason? Does God not want all his people under one unit? The church? The bride? Does God not care for his people or his loved creations that he cares for and loves? Remember you don’t serve anything but yet the God I serve is caring, loving, compassionate, and kind… just like you.
So i suppose my message has changed from our worth ethic and workmanship to who we serve in higher places… I hope this made you think and opened your eyes to what is in front of you. Now….
Luke 24:31 a.
“Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him…”
May the Lord Bless you and keep you safe in your days… May he open your hearts, may he open your eyes, and may he open your mind to knowing and seeing him and his love. Amen
